Just a day after the photo leak, Audi officially announced the 2012 Audi A6 today. What we see in the new 2012 Audi A6 is a completely renewed model of a mid-size luxury sedan that is much similar to the 2011 Audi A8 sedan, but only in a smaller version. And there are plenty of new technologies to go around the in the 2012 Audi A6 as well, such as from lightweight aluminum body work to the luxurious interior that fills with new electronic amenities.
Much of the interior is lay down with creature comfort amenities that are similar to the 2011 Audi A8 sedan: high-end leather and wood pieces, touchscreen navigation with 3D graphics chip to display Google Earth maps, voice control system, Bluetooth interface, WLAN hotspot connectivity, and heated seats with massage functionality.
The 2012 Audi A6 will be offered with five engine choices including two gasoline engines and three TDI diesel engines, with power output ranging from 177 hp to 300 hp. Starting with a 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine producing 177 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, it is estimated to attain about 48 miles per gallon. The 2.0-liter diesel engine has a lot of torque, but don’t expect it to have cat-like sprinting nature. The 2.0-liter TDI allows the 2012 Audi A6 to launch from 0-62 mph in about 8.7 seconds with a top speed of 142 mph.
The strongest engine offered for the new 2012 A6 sedan will be the 3.0 TFSI unit producing 300 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque. This supercharged engine has an estimated fuel economy rating of 27 miles per gallon, which is not bad for an engine of its size. The Audi A6 3.0 TFSI able to sprint from 0-62 mph in just 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.
The other gasoline engine is a 2.8-liter naturally aspirated unit that produces 204 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque which may or may not be available in the States (don’t hold you breath). For oil burner fans, two 3.0-liter diesel choices exist: a 204 hp/295 lb-ft example and a top-of-the-line 245 hp/368 lb-ft mill. The more powerful unit is rated at nearly 40 mpg yet runs from 0-60 in just 6.1 seconds.
There will also be a 2012 A6 Hybrid version as well, which will follow later after the initial launch. The A6 Hybrid model will be the second hybrid model offered by Audi after the Q5 Hybrid quattro. To achieve hybrid fuel economy model, power will certainly come from a 2.0 TFSI engine that is combined with an electric motor, and power is shifted through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. The 2.0 TFSI engine generating 211 horsepower, which combined with an electric motor that produces 45 hp and 155.63 lb-ft of torque.
On pure electricity, the 2012 Audi A6 Hybrid can muster up to speed of 62 mph and at a constant speed of 37 mph for up to 1.8 miles.
