Porsche plans to race its 918 Spyder hybrid

Porsche is planning its return to the NAIAS after a four-year absence, and it will convert its new 918 Spyder hybrid to a race car version for 2011. The new race coupe will make its first appearance at this year North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit next week.

It will be a treat to see 918 Spyder race coupe pit against the likes of McLaren and Ferrari down the circuit. Porsche hasn’t revealed the official specs of the 918 Spyder race coupe, but acccording to Bloomberg, it reports that the race coupe featuring a 600-hp V8 engine, which is less horsepower than the production form. Interestingly, the production model of the 918 Spyder hybrid will get a 500-hp 3.4-liter V8 coupled with two electric motors to produce an additional 218 horsepower (160kW).

In production form, the 918 Spyder hybrid costs about 500,000 euros ($670,000), and it can accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds.

As for now, all we got is just this one photo and a few speculations of what the 918 Spyder race coupe ought to be. We will have more details by next week as the race coupe makes its debut in Detroit.
