Toyota will introduce the iQ EV prototype to the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The new iQ EV protype will set stage for an all-electric subcompact car in 2012. It is Toyota’s long-term vision to introduce such a short range vehicle for the metropolis and urban transportation.
The new iQ EV protype’s electric powertrain is based on Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive. It is equipped with a new flat lithium ion battery that is capable of traveling 65 miles on a single charge. The battery pack is located beneath the vehicle floor to provide maximum loadspace and passenger accommodation.
Currently, the Toyota iQ EV prototype is being tested on European roads, and will be available for leasing in the European market sometime in 2012. In addition, Toyota has already announced plans to make the iQ EV available in other markets as well, and one such definite market is the U.S.
So, the question is now which to choose, iQ EV or Aston Martin Cygnet?

Based on the current iQ model, the EV prototype represents Toyota’s long-term vision for short-range, sustainable mobility and demonstrates the adaptability of Hybrid Synergy Drive technology for a range of alternative power systems. The vehicle successfully integrates an all-electric powertrain within the iQ package, maintaining the car’s essential urban-friendly agility with zero tailpipe emissions and easy, silent electric running.
A newly developed, flat and compact lithium-ion battery has been accommodated beneath the vehicle floor without compromising loadspace or passenger accommodation. It provides enough charge to give the car a range of up to 65 miles*.
The EV prototype is being put through testing on European roads this year, with a potential market introduction through a leasing programme in 2012. Toyota has already announced its plans to bring the car to market in the USA and is also investigating its viability in other regions.
The EV prototype will be featured on the Toyota stand at Geneva alongside three models making their world-first appearance: Yaris HSD, Prius+ and FT-86 Concept II.
The Toyota press conference will take place at 9.15am on 1 March.
