The Toyota Prius is most certainly the most popular hybrid model sold in the U.S. It has managed to sold one million units in the U.S.  When it comes to hybrid cars, the Toyota Prius is the most beloved car in the U.S. due to its versatile and affordable characteristics. And as we see fuel prices starting to rise again recently, it has accounted for more than 60 percent of hybrid passenger car sales so far this year.

“Since the Prius went on sale eleven years ago not a year has gone by when it hasn’t been the number one selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager.

The third-generation Prius topped the EPA’s list of the Most Fuel Efficient Vehicles for 2011. Toyota claims that since its launch in the U.S. in 2000, the Prius has “saved American consumers more than an estimated 881 million gallons of gas, $2.19 billion in fuel costs, and 12.4 million tons of CO2 emissions” when compared to non-hybrid cars.

To add to the total sales for next year, Toyota will be introducing the Prius V minivan by the third quarter of this year.  In addition, it plans to launch two more variants called the Prius C compact hybrid and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid by early 2012. Currently, the Toyota Prius is in short supply, and the supply may be running out by the end of this week due to earthquake in Japan that halted production.
