Mercedes-Benz has just announced the latest 2012 SLS AMG Roadster supercar, but this time, it done away with the gull-wing and roof. Instead, Mercedes-Benz replaced it with a cloth soft-top, can be opened or closed at speeds up to 31 miles per hour.
To make the drop-top version possible, Mercedes engineers had to up the structure. This means by adding more sturdy side skirts, cross-member support, and additional bracing to both the window frame and transmission tunnel to increased strength and overall rigidity of the aluminum spaceframe. The result weight is just five pounds more than the SLS AMG Coupe.
As for the powertrain, the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster remains the same as coupe version. Top speed is about 197 miles per hour, but perhaps, zero to 60 mph time may be a bit slower.
We’ll have more info when the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster debuts at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
