McLaren recently announced its MP4-12C GT3 race car for the 24 Hours of Spa endurance race. McLaren modified the car with aerodynamic parts and a lighter powertrain parts. McLaren plans to debut the race car at the Circuito de Navarra in Spain and later at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Surprisingly, the MP4-12C GT3 race car has 100 horsepower less the street model. It uses the same V8 engine but producing only 500 horsepower (down from 600 hp in the street model). However, the de-tuned engine is mated to a lighter 7-speed gearbox, which is about 160 pounds lighter than the street car’s gearbox. In addition to the powertrain and aerodynamic tweaks, the MP4-12C GT3 race car gets a new track-spec suspension setup.
McLaren plans to build about twenty MP4-12C GT3 racecars for customers, and it will be priced at $512,000.
Another surprising move by McLaren after the announcement of the MP4-12C GT3 race car is that it plans to make a new street version of the MP4-12C GT3 annually for the next five years, with the first one set to introduce by 2014.
