Perhaps Ford is getting a bit stingy these days or it is reinventing the two-stroke engine found in the classic VW Beetle. Ford has confirmed development of a 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine for 2013.

The 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine will be the smallest engine Ford has ever built, and it will be used globally in sub-compact cars.  Although Ford hasn’t spilled any specific details about the power output or its fuel economy numbers, but from experience, we expect this little engine will provide about 85 horsepower with a fuel economy at around 50 miles to the gallon. Just lets hope Ford doesn’t put it in anything drastic such as standard sedan, but we are thinking it may end up in the Ford Fiesta model.

Ford states that it plans to announce more details about the 1.0-liter engine at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, including what vehicles will be powered by this little engine.
