Audi just officially unleashed its new convertible version of its limited-edition R8 GT. The new 2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder is powered by the same V10 engine as the hard-top version.
The 2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder has the same power output as the coupe, which is equipped with a 5.2-liter V10 producing 560 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. The 5.2-liter V10 with an aluminum crankcase uses an FSI direct injection system along with a dry-sump lubrication ensures a reliable supply of oil even under maximum lateral or straight-line acceleration. Audi claims it can blitz from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds and with a top speed of 197 mph.
With the hard-top being cut off, Audi had to make some adjustments with the structure integrity of the 2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder, but at the same time Audi wants its weight to be reduced as well, and has done so by a reduction of 187 pounds. This is accomplished by using a variety of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic for the cover of the soft top, the rear spoiler and the rear bumper. But the biggest weight reduction came from the light seats, which shed about 70 pounds.
To set the 2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder visually a bit apart from hard-top version, Audi added a dual-lip front spoiler, carbon fiber winglets on the front bumper, round tailpipes, a larger rear diffuser and dark LED taillights. In addition, the interior receives standard equipment includes an automatic air conditioning system, the navigation system plus, an alarm system and the driver information system with a built-in laptimer.
Production of the new 2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder will be will be limited to just 333 units, which comes with a price tag of 207,800 Euro.
