General Motors has officially unleashed the new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic (Aveo) subcompact sedan at a starting price of $14,495 (including destination charges) and along with the five-door hatchback version at $15,395 MSRP.
The new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 138 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, and it is mated to a standard 5-speed manual transmission. The Sonic is expected to deliver 40 mpg highway when paired with the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and a 6-speed manual transmission.
The base model Chevrolet Sonic also comes standard with 10 air bags, remote keyless entry, power door locks, and 15-inch alloy wheels
Optional equipment for the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic such as a six-speed automatic transmission for $1,070, and a more powerful turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with six-speed manual transmission will add another $700. This combined optional equipment is only available on LT and LTZ trims.
The pricing of 2012 Chevrolet Sonic sedan seems rather higher than most subcompact cars on the market. In comparison, the Ford Fiesta S sedan starts at $13,995 while the Honda Fit hatchback starts at $15,870 and the Toyota Yaris starts at $13,915. But the cheapest subcompact car title would be given to the Nissan Versa, which starts at $10,750.
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will be available by this fall in three models (LS, LT, and LTZ) with two body styles.
