2012 Porsche 911 Carrera officially starts at $82,100

With a few spy videos and photos leaked, Porsche has no choice but to finally official release details about the all-new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera along with the starting price of $82,100. The iconic 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera is in its seventh generation, yet it looks unmistakably similar to the classic 911 even with its sleek modern design.

The major changes in the 2012 Porsche 911 start with the length of the sports car, which is now 3.9 inches longer in the wheelbase along with a reduced overall height. In addition, the side mirrors are now mounted on the upper edge of the door. The new light-weight body is made of aluminum-steel composite, which shaved off about 100 pounds compared to previous 911 model.

The interior even got a major lift as well, which most of design cues were inspired by both the Carrera GT and Porsche Panamera. The cockpit is now more driver oriented with the help of the rising center console and high-mounted shift lever that located close to the steering wheels. Five round gauges are used for the instrument panel cluster, with one as high resolution multifunction screen.

As for the powertrain, the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera is equipped with a new 350-hp 3.4-liter boxer engine and optional PDK transmission. While the 911 Carrera S is equipped with a 3.8-liter boxer engine producing 400 horsepower, and it also comes with an optional PDK transmission. Otherwise, both models are equipped with a new 7-speed manual transmission as standard.

Porsche claims that the 911 Carrera S with PDK can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 188 mph, but when using the Launch Control function of the optional Sport Chrono Package, it reduces the acceleration time to 3.9 seconds. While the 911 Carrera with PDK transmission can achieve a 0-60 mph time in about 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 179 mph (4.2 seconds when using the optional Sport Chrono Package’s Launch Control function).

The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera will make its live debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It will later be available at U.S. dealerships starting in February 2012 with a base MSRP of $82,100 for the Carrera and $96,400 for the Carrera S.
