Porsche has been aggressively expanding its vehicle lineup for the past few years. We’ve seen new cars that were introduced entirely based around the 911 model, which include smaller sportscars, sedans and SUVs. And now the company is planning to add a super sports car in the similar range as the Ferrari 458 Italia, McLaren MP4-12C, and Lamborghini Gallardo.

Even though Porsche has the 918 Spyder, but that seems a bit too pricey to many customers. So the new Porsche 960 sports car is created with a price range of around $250,000, which will be slotted between the Porsche 911 and the upcoming 918 Spyder. And at $250,000, the Porsche 960 will have a similar price range as the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C supercars.

Initially, the Porsche 960 is expected to have a twin-turbo V8 engine with on the current 911-based chassis. That plan has been dropped according to CAR Magazine. The new Porsche 960 supercar is now reported to have a new V6 mid-engine with a new chassis. The new twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 boxer engine is expected to produce about 600 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. New details suggest that the model is internally known as ‘project 960′ and will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s new Mimo platform. The Mimo internally known as the MSB-M, which stands for “modular sports car matrix, mid-engined version”.

Production of the new Porsche 960 is expected somewhere in September 2015, with both coupe and convertible versions.
