Recent news had us believed that there will be a Chevrolet Sonic SS version in 2012, but it seems that got canned. No matter, Chevrolet promises there will be a sportier version in 2013.
The new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will be powered by a 1.4L, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine instead of the normal aspirated 1.8L engine in the current version. According to John Buttermore, lead development engineer, the all-new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic was designed for “fun, lively motoring.”
Recent interview with Wards Auto, when asked if the turbo Sonic might come as an SS version, John Buttermore replied, “It would take a lot more air going through that engine for an SS, and there is no SS in the works.” He then added, “For 2013, we do have some sportier versions coming, just not an SS.”
Guess we’ll have to settle for a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox for the 2012 Chevy Sonic for now. After all, it is hard for Chevy to overtake the already well developed Ford Focus RS. It will be detrimental if Chevy decided to.
