The never ending power race between the Camaro and Mustang is relentless. Chevrolet has just released the new Camaro ZL1, and now, Ford is planning to come out with the more powerful 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang.
While not much has changed visually from the current GT500, we do see some minor aerodynamic tweaks like revised front fascia with new air splitters along with a slightly revised rear bumper. And as for the interior, Inside, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 gets new Recaro front bucket seats while the rest of interior receives minor refinements.
But under the hood of the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is where you find all the major changes. It is equipped with a new 5.8-liter aluminum V8 engine featuring a larger, more efficient supercharger, which produces a staggering 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque straight out of the factory. To get to this power level, almost the entire powertrain has been upgraded: including a new cross-drilled block and heads, revised camshaft profiles, a carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission, axle, and even the cooling system has also been upgraded as well. In addition, a new six-speed manual transmission now has a final drive ratio of 3.31-to-1 to be able to handle the massive torque.
Also, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang has an optional GT500 Performance Pack, which added an electronic adjustable dampers with ‘normal’ and ‘sport’ modes and a Torsen limited-slip differential. And for those who visit the track often, there is the Track Package, which adds an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler.
The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 weighs in at about 3,850 pounds, and it will not be subject to the Gas Guzzler Tax this time. The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will make its debut at the LA Auto Show this week.
