Just as Rinspeed about to introduce its trailer dock concept for the SmartForTwo car, Smart automotive is releasing its own SmartForTwo pickup version. If you think about it, these are rather non-competing products. For those who current a SmartForTwo car, a trailer dock would seem welcoming for the extra cargo space.
Lets start with the Rinspeed Dock+Go. It is designed to make the SmartForTwo more practical by expanding its cargo space with a trailer dock for those long vacation trips. The Dock+Go mobility concept not only provides extra cargo space but also offers extra battery capacity. In addition, the rear wheels act as a generator to recharge the battery pack while they are rolling. As a result, the SmartForTwo’s driving range has extended a bit.
And for those who haven’t owned a SmartForTwo car yet, there is SmartForTwo pickup concept (Smart For-Us Concept) that will be coming out at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show next month. The SmartForTwo pickup concept will be catering to the “young and young-at-heart with active lives.” While it doesn’t have much cargo capacity, it does have ample space for two people and space for two ebikes behind the seats. In addition, the trunk has an ebike docking station featuring chargers.
“We at smart love pick-ups – if they are small on the outside, large on the inside, very safe and extremely comfortable,” said smart CEO Dr. Annette Winkler. “With the smart for-us a petrol station is no longer required!”
Power for the SmartForTwo pickup concept is provided by an electric-drive system consisting of a 55kQ magneto electric-motor producing 75 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque. Top speed for the SmartForTwo pickup concept is said to be around 75 mph.
Stay tuned, we’ll have more details when the SmartForTwo pickup concept makes its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January.
