Ford Tourneo Custom van unveiled in Europe, not U.S.

Ford of Europe has officially uncovered the production model of the Tourneo Custom van. The van was initially debuted earlier this month as a concept model, and after a great reception, Ford has decided to make a production model.

At a glance, we thought the Ford Tourneo Custom van is made by Volkswagen. Yeah, this is how good it looks from this angle. As a matter of fact, we haven’t seen such a stylish and well-scrupted van from Ford since the first Ford Econoline.

“The bold new Tourneo Custom signals the start of a revolution in Ford’s commercial vehicle range,” said Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe. “It’s a fantastic-looking people mover – inside and out – and offers outstanding day-to-day, real world practicality as well as being great to drive.”

Anyhow, the Ford Tourneo Custom van is a front-wheel drive van that is available in both short- and long-wheelbase versions, which is measured in 195.7 inches and 210.2 inches in length, respectively. It can hold up to nine passengers while still has plenty of room for cargo.

Unlike your grandpa’s Ford van, the Ford Tourneo Custom van is modern and designed mainly as a people mover. The interior is driver oriented, where the instrument panel is focused on the driver. Not only that, it comes with a slew of high tech equipment such as Ford SYNC, a rear-view camera, ECOnetic Technologies, lane-keeping assist and driver alert.

To keep fuel economy in perspective, the Ford Tourneo Custom van is equipped with a few variants of the revised 2.2-liter Duratorq four cylinder engine. It offered in 99-, 123- and 153-horsepower versions, and all are paired with a six-speed manual transmission. To further reduce fuel consumption, the Ford Tourneo Custom van can be had with a 6-speed automatic transmission with standard Auto-Start-Stop technology. Estimated combined fuel economy rating is about 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers, which is an equivalent to 34 miles per gallon on the U.S. cycle.

Even though the Ford Transit van is really a fuel miser and good for commercial use, but we won’t be caught dead driving it around town in leisure. It really sucks to know that the new Ford Tourneo Custom van won’t be available in the United States anytime soon. Ford, bring the goods to the States already!
