Even if there is no country for old men, there is always room in the modern car arena. Bob Lutz recently stopped by at Jay Leno’s Garage to show off his new electric Silverado pickup. The extended-range VTrux electric pickup by Via Motors is built on the same electric platform as the Chevy Volt, which uses a gasoline engine to generate electricity for the mounted electric motor. In a sense, it is a hybrid car.
The VTrux electric pickup combines a 4.3-liter V6 with an electric motor to offer around a full range of 300 miles on both gasoline and electric, and 50 miles of driving on just electric alone. Once the battery juice is gone, the V6 engine automatic kicks in and acts as a generator to provide power to charge the batteries. For a full charge when connected to a 220-volt outlet, it takes just four hours.
According to Bob Lutz, Via Motors can install the same hybrid system into a full-size General Motors vans as well as models such as the Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade.
All is good, but the VTrux plug-in hybrid conversion isn’t cheap. Via Motors estimates the price of a Silverado-based VTRUX at $79,000. Check out the video below for some action.
