The Facebook tease of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is over. Today, Mercedes-Benz goes on full-throttle of a press release of its newest black speed demon. The new 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series has gone through an extensive change to improve both performance and weight reduction.
Starting with the powertrain, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series gets an extra 39 horsepower squeezed out of the 6.2-liter V8 engine, which is now has a total power output of 622 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque (11 lb-ft lesser than previous model). So is the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series any quicker? With its new electronically-controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, its acceleration time from 0-60 mph is now at 3.5 seconds, while top speed is around 196 mph.
And we almost forgot to mention, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission also features an automatic rev-matching function during downshifting: the throttle blips when shifting gears. There is also a new temporary M mode, which the driver experiences the gear-shifting like in a manual mode in all of the automatic driving programs, with automatic up and down-shifting as well. While in C, S or S+ mode, this enables the driver to activate manual mode without taking a hand from the steering wheel, by pressing the “up” or “down” shift paddle once.
We know that the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is no jack rabbit when it comes to weight, and that is why Mercedes-Benz has spent considerable time to reduce its curb weight. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series now weighs in at 3,417 pounds (154 pounds lighter than SLS AMG GT), and all thanks to its the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy, which replaces everything with either carbon fiber reinforced plastic or ceramic parts where it can. The handling of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is now more agile and aerodynamic with the help of upgraded ceramic brakes with two-piece rotors, adjustable coil over suspension, electronically controlled rear differential and a wider track (one inch wider).
According to Mercedes-Benz, the styling of the new 2014 SLS AMG Black Series was inspired by its GT3 racecar. We can definitely see this inspiration in elements such as the front chin spoiler, forged alloy wheels, rear diffuser and the vented side skirts and rear bumper. The racecar styling also extends to many of the body panels are made of CFRP, including the flared front and rear fenders. Even the interior also got the GT3 racecar inspiration, which includes a sport steering wheel featuring a red 12 o’clock marking.
