Toyota announced two different voluntary recalls on 907,000 Corolla models for faulty air-bags and around 385,000 Lexus IS vehicles fitted with defective wipers worldwide. In the U.S. alone, there are recalls on 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles built from the 2003 and 2004, and 270,000 Lexus IS vehicles from the 2006-2012 due to these defectives.
Toyota spokesman said that two crashes have been reported in the U.S. related to the air bag problem on the Corolla and Corolla Matrix models. The accidents were caused by the failure of the airbag control module for the supplemental restraint system, which is susceptible to internal shorting. This causes the front airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners “could inadvertently deploy”.
As for the Lexus IS, Toyota said the wiper arm nuts might not be sufficiently tight and that if there’s a buildup of heavy snow on the windshield, the wipers could become inoperative.
Toyota has not yet officially announced the recall action but said it will notify owners via first class mail later on.
