New Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept crossover is out of the garage


The highly anticipated Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept crossover got leaked before its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show this coming up Friday. Images of the new crossover managed to emerge online with every angle for us to see. From the looks, the style seems to be based on the small A-Class hatchback; with similar wheelbase, but it is a bit larger.

As we know of right now, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept crossover will be powered by with a variety of engine choices: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and two grades of diesel engines. In charge of the gear shifting will be done with a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. If you want more power, it is expected a GLA45 AMG will also be available. It comes with about 300 horsepower.

Update: 4-2-2013 – Confirmed

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept crossover  made its debut today at the Shanghai Auto Show, and it is confirmed to have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In addition, the new crossover is equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

The exterior is bodily and aggressive designed for this crossover. These include the powerful hood with its powerdomes and a bold radiator grille with centrally positioned star. From the rear end, there are a load sill guard and a concealing skid plate fascia panel in the rear bumper, which the tailgate features a power closing system with a touch of the button. Finishing off the rear end is a twin-pipe exhaust system to complete the SVU’s aggressive appearance.

“The Concept GLA marks a new approach for us in the compact SUV segment – this is a sporty and more coupé-like evolution of this category of vehicle”, commented Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales and Marketing. “The Concept GLA is a compact SUV that combines its sporting spirit with the all-round qualities of a tough, leisure-time companion. ‘Escape the everyday’ is the message that this car conveys to its driver. It also makes clear the further potential of our compact vehicle architecture, which provides the basis for the A- and B-Class models that led the German market in their respective segments in the first quarter of 2013.”

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept crossover’s interior is donned with contrast of leather and dark galvanized aluminum. The four individual seats and the door center panels are upholstered in natural leather in a rich brown tone. The seat cushions feature central inlay panels in a high-quality canvas material, display an embossed pattern that continues the saddle theme.
