mustang shelby gt500 Ford won the most Excellence Awards from Popular Mechanics

Ford won again in the Popular Mechanics 2010 Automotive Excellence Awards, winning more categories by a single brand than any other automaker in the history of the awards. And guess what, it includes the Mustang Shelby GT500 in the Performance category.  Ford came out on top for most of the Poplular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards’ categories.

It wouldn’t be a surprise due to the fact that Ford made good sales this year so far while other car manufactures are struggling. The editors of Popular Mechanics describe the Mustang Shelby GT500 as a new superpower to contend with in the 21st-century muscle car wars.

“The Mustang Shelby GT500 – with its incredibly potent 5.4-liter V-8 engine – certainly impressed us,” said Stewart. “But it was Ford Special Vehicle Team’s (SVT) refinement of the chassis that made our staff declare the GT500 the best Mustang in the model’s long 45-year history.”

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 28, 2009 – Editors at Popular Mechanics today announced the winners of the magazine’s 2010 Automotive Excellence Awards, and Ford Motor Company set a precedent, winning more categories in a single year than any other automaker in the history of the awards.

The Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards recognize the best in automotive design, execution and technology for 2010 model year vehicles in 10 categories. Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT500 won the award in the Performance category, Transit Connect took top honors in the Workhorse category and F-150 SVT Raptor earned the award in the Off-Road Ability category.

“Ford’s sweep of three categories in this year’s awards speaks to the onslaught of great products coming from Dearborn,” said Ben Stewart, automotive editor, Popular Mechanics.

Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company, accepted the awards on behalf of the Ford team.

“This important recognition reflects the strength and diversity of the Ford product lineup,” said Kuzak. “From a performance car to a workhorse vehicle to an off-road pickup, Ford is building quality products that people really want.”

To determine award winners, Stewart says editors of Popular Mechanics travel the globe and spend thousands of miles behind the wheel of every new car and truck introduced by the world’s automakers. After months of hands-on testing and research, the team nominates a list of vehicles in each category, then votes on the winners.

2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – Performance Category Winner
The editors of Popular Mechanics describe the Mustang Shelby GT500 as a new superpower to contend with in the 21st-century muscle car wars.

“The Mustang Shelby GT500 – with its incredibly potent 5.4-liter V-8 engine – certainly impressed us,” said Stewart. “But it was Ford Special Vehicle Team’s (SVT) refinement of the chassis that made our staff declare the GT500 the best Mustang in the model’s long 45-year history.”

2010 Ford Transit Connect – Workhorse Category Winner
Popular Mechanics editors praise the Ford Transit Connect as a fresh alternative to a full-size van that is packaged to address the pressures of the economy, urban congestion and fluctuating gas prices.

“It was the brilliant combination of the Transit Connect’s efficient use of space – and fuel – that won over our team,” said Stewart. “This vehicle proves that small vehicles can handle big jobs, and it comes at an ideal time when contractors and other business owners are looking to downsize and save on fuel.”

2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor – Off-Road Ability Category Winner
“The most extreme high-speed 4×4 pickup ever produced,” is the way editors of Popular Mechanics describe Ford’s F-150 SVT Raptor.

“We spent time riding along with Ford SVT engineers at near race speeds and had a chance to climb behind the wheel of the truck ourselves,” said Stewart. “For the avid off-roader, the Raptor is the truck we’ve all been waiting for.”

Stewart says he was particularly impressed with the tuning of Raptor’s long-travel suspension.

“It soaks up high-speed desert terrain better than any production pickup truck we’ve driven,” he said.

    - super car, because it can only win if you’re going straight, and frankly I know of more cars that can beat it at that as well. And the GTR would have at least 300 hp which isn’t slow, plus the fact that the ZR! and Z06 use bigger engines. Frankly, it’s a waste of an engine, because it doesn’t even get 100 hp per liter. The GTR does more. but do you know what? I favor European cars to both. Then Asian cars, and the American. At least European cars have class and the Japanese don’t fall apart.

You didn’t answer to any of my objections and street racing is for assholes that want to kill innocent people. The GTR is from Nissan and shares nothing with an Accord. Do you know why they didn’t fit the GTR with swivling lights? It’s because the motors that move the lights broke and coulsn’t keep up, that’s how hard the GTR corners. And drag races don’t take skill to win in, you just need a more powerful car. Circut races where actual engineering comes into play. The ZR1 is a sad attempt of a-

If they hated it then why would the build a custom version? And as for the GTR, it’s still faster aroung the Nurburgring! That is where cars are tested to the limits! The ZR1 has 2 seats, cheap plastic body and the intrior sucks! The GTR has 4 seats, 4 doors, has way better build quality, doesn’t have the world’s worst intrior! And on top of all that costs LESS! All the videos don’t make a differance, the GTR is still better. And a GTR with 640hp would easily win any car with less as well!!

… and what do you mean it’s the ring that counts… street racing has no rings… real time racing out there on real streets is where it’s really @.. and america owns all competitors… also… take the turbos off of the GTR and it’s real slow.. take the supercharger off of the ZR1 and you get the Zo6 which runs low 12′s from the factory… a true race car.. not an overglorified accord with turbos

  • mattbmx1234

haha.. hennessey GTR??.. please.. even hennessey themselves hates that shit.. and they even stated it right on the site when the GTR came out…..@ the dyno .. the vette had 500hp to the rear wheels and the GTR with 440hp… look up ZR1 smoked GTR ..not much differance @ all with HP….GTR is ZR1 food… also.. the shelby aero is the fastest production car… EVER… @ 1/4 the cost of the veyron…

  • AdrianC12345

And yet all of the cars you mentioned are not stock and cost more money. Now if I were to say a Hennessey GTR that would be a different conversation. Plus a ZR1 has way more power, and it cost’s more and yet it still lost to the GTR aroung the ‘ring, which is where it really counts. Not like the American racetracks that have mostly straights in them. But even so I wasn’t talking about the GTR, I was talking about the LFA.

  • xtremesoccer909

what song is playing in the backround?

  • mattbmx1234

do you mean the GTR.. which the ZR1 ran circles around??… in EVERY test.. not just 1/4 mile…and the fastest 1/4 mile car time was 4.3 sec by an 69 SS camaro…. another 69 camaro got the record in drifting as well……Jepp Cherokee SRT Hennessey is the fastest truck on the planet… stock 1/4 mile is a 10.4… Caddy CTS-V… smoked 105 imports … and the Hennessey runs cirles even quicler around those who it smoked stock…

  • hellyeah0136

I have a moped! Thumbs up!

  • AdrianC12345

Then why does “jap garbage” beat muscle cars in races?

  • AdrianC12345

but it still has that rear live axle. Really, if it would cost Ford an extra 5 grand then do it, it would sell so much more!

  • mattbmx1234

it weighs less .. especially 2 the nose… so it would be safe to say that it would… the full test has yet to be advertised but is in the works… also has 410 stock horsepower
