mustang shelby gt500 Ford won the most Excellence Awards from Popular Mechanics

Ford won again in the Popular Mechanics 2010 Automotive Excellence Awards, winning more categories by a single brand than any other automaker in the history of the awards. And guess what, it includes the Mustang Shelby GT500 in the Performance category.  Ford came out on top for most of the Poplular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards’ categories.

It wouldn’t be a surprise due to the fact that Ford made good sales this year so far while other car manufactures are struggling. The editors of Popular Mechanics describe the Mustang Shelby GT500 as a new superpower to contend with in the 21st-century muscle car wars.

“The Mustang Shelby GT500 – with its incredibly potent 5.4-liter V-8 engine – certainly impressed us,” said Stewart. “But it was Ford Special Vehicle Team’s (SVT) refinement of the chassis that made our staff declare the GT500 the best Mustang in the model’s long 45-year history.”

Press Release»

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 28, 2009 – Editors at Popular Mechanics today announced the winners of the magazine’s 2010 Automotive Excellence Awards, and Ford Motor Company set a precedent, winning more categories in a single year than any other automaker in the history of the awards.

The Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards recognize the best in automotive design, execution and technology for 2010 model year vehicles in 10 categories. Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT500 won the award in the Performance category, Transit Connect took top honors in the Workhorse category and F-150 SVT Raptor earned the award in the Off-Road Ability category.

“Ford’s sweep of three categories in this year’s awards speaks to the onslaught of great products coming from Dearborn,” said Ben Stewart, automotive editor, Popular Mechanics.

Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company, accepted the awards on behalf of the Ford team.

“This important recognition reflects the strength and diversity of the Ford product lineup,” said Kuzak. “From a performance car to a workhorse vehicle to an off-road pickup, Ford is building quality products that people really want.”

To determine award winners, Stewart says editors of Popular Mechanics travel the globe and spend thousands of miles behind the wheel of every new car and truck introduced by the world’s automakers. After months of hands-on testing and research, the team nominates a list of vehicles in each category, then votes on the winners.

2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – Performance Category Winner
The editors of Popular Mechanics describe the Mustang Shelby GT500 as a new superpower to contend with in the 21st-century muscle car wars.

“The Mustang Shelby GT500 – with its incredibly potent 5.4-liter V-8 engine – certainly impressed us,” said Stewart. “But it was Ford Special Vehicle Team’s (SVT) refinement of the chassis that made our staff declare the GT500 the best Mustang in the model’s long 45-year history.”

2010 Ford Transit Connect – Workhorse Category Winner
Popular Mechanics editors praise the Ford Transit Connect as a fresh alternative to a full-size van that is packaged to address the pressures of the economy, urban congestion and fluctuating gas prices.

“It was the brilliant combination of the Transit Connect’s efficient use of space – and fuel – that won over our team,” said Stewart. “This vehicle proves that small vehicles can handle big jobs, and it comes at an ideal time when contractors and other business owners are looking to downsize and save on fuel.”

2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor – Off-Road Ability Category Winner
“The most extreme high-speed 4×4 pickup ever produced,” is the way editors of Popular Mechanics describe Ford’s F-150 SVT Raptor.

“We spent time riding along with Ford SVT engineers at near race speeds and had a chance to climb behind the wheel of the truck ourselves,” said Stewart. “For the avid off-roader, the Raptor is the truck we’ve all been waiting for.”

Stewart says he was particularly impressed with the tuning of Raptor’s long-travel suspension.

“It soaks up high-speed desert terrain better than any production pickup truck we’ve driven,” he said.

See, that’s the thing! You can make a car more efficient but American cars aren’t, I don’t care if a car is naturally aspirated or not, I need an efficient car that I can still get extra power from. I prefer smaller turbo engines because they are lighter while still producing tons of power. They should make a 4 liter engine for the Mustang, it can still be a V8, and supercharge it s that way it’ll be as powerful while being lighter and the car will go faster. But some people don’t get it!

  • Apoth3cary

Ok, lets compare fair, a naturally aspirated Inline 5, 2.5L, found in the VWs. It has 177 Torque (naturally aspirated)to the naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 in the 2011 Mustang GT, it has 390 torque. 177 times 2 is 354. Meaning the Mustang GT has more torque per liter than a nautrally aspirated 2.5L, and the VW 2.5 is just as torque as any other NATURALLY ASPIRATED 2.5L. Now, if you turbo charger and intercool the Volvos 2.5L, its a beast, but imagine that turbo on a 5.0L Mustang GT…

  • AdrianC12345

What cars have you been in? And just because they don’t have the growl of the V8 doesn’t mean it’s crap, it still sounds good. But then V8s can’t rev as high and then that’s where they seem hard pushed, where as 4 cylenders will go to 9,000 rpms.

  • AdrianC12345

But that V8 is twice the size of the inline 5. And the RS has more torque than every mustang up until this new one, and still the V8 is a sad engine because it’s twice the engine and not even twice the torque. And the 2011 mustang gets wow, 10 extra torques. The RS doesn’t need it, it’s still faster. And better built, and nicer to drive, and uses less gas, and has a nicer intrior, and you can actually fit people into the car.

BLAH BLAH, to the jap crap…..

  • MrStreck

man the guy thats talking thinks this car is badass he needs to take a look at the supersnake with 725 hp form factory

  • Apoth3cary

Well, thats until 2011, because Ford was cheap and didnt change their V8 for a while but now, no 5 cylinders gonna got 390 torque, AND that 5 cylinder gets 325, Stang gets 335. ALSO, the 5 cylinder has turbo and intercooler, so thats why, turbo that Mustang and see if that 5 cylinder compares.

First of all let me say, ford is a pussy car..I mean they just dont have the power to keep a smile on a guys face..540hp..Man take this car and dive it off a cliff..Better yet, take all of ford cars and do that..Look at this man,car cant even turn correctly..WTF?? LMAO..Who would even want a car that cant hit turns correctly??Waste of money..Might as well just take your 50k or whatever and just toss it out the window..Cause thats what you doing when you buy a ford car..

  • Sheri553

ok buddy did u every drive both? thers is a big diff..idc wat for numbers they put down at the end of the day horse power for ur dollar a mustang cheaper

  • mattbmx1234

it would be really heavy.. and may not be as fast.. also would for sure handle like shit… also… the mustang has always been an 8 cylinder.. and thats the way it should stay.

  • mattbmx1234

well the reason they arent wortha damn is cause now matter how much HP you drop into the car.. it will sound like shit….I have driven a friends low cylinder car with mods and it feels nothing like an 8 cylinder.. and the below 8 cylinder engines that were wortha damn were ..buick crand national, GMC typhoon,CTS, 4.0 ltr inline 6 jeep engines and the 4.3 blazer engines….but i guess we have to agree to disagree..

  • AdrianC12345

Why is a car with less than 8 cylinders crap? You have no reasoning, you can get low end torque from a 5 cylinder, they tend to have higher torque than horsepower just like V8s. Really, if you’ve been in a Volvo turbo, they have maximum torque from 1800 rpm to 5000 rpm, low end torque. The V8 in a Mustang doesn’t produce as much torque as the Ford Focus RS, which uses a Volvo 5 cylender and have you ever heard the engine!?. It sounds like a V8 but it isn’t!

  • RundownCK183

This thing has a V8 motor right? What will be the difference if we put in a V12 motor?

  • mattbmx1234

GTR is a six banger garbage can that cannot perform well with two gargantuan turbos.. which is sad.. i favor American and I have never had one that broke down or has ever given me a problem.. and i got 180,000 plus miles with pedal to the metal out of all of em… it’s 8 cylinder or above or your car aint worth shit.. especially if it’s jap garbage… ZR1 beat the GTR in the NĂĽrburgring.. look it up
