mustang shelby gt500 Ford won the most Excellence Awards from Popular Mechanics

Ford won again in the Popular Mechanics 2010 Automotive Excellence Awards, winning more categories by a single brand than any other automaker in the history of the awards. And guess what, it includes the Mustang Shelby GT500 in the Performance category.  Ford came out on top for most of the Poplular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards’ categories.

It wouldn’t be a surprise due to the fact that Ford made good sales this year so far while other car manufactures are struggling. The editors of Popular Mechanics describe the Mustang Shelby GT500 as a new superpower to contend with in the 21st-century muscle car wars.

“The Mustang Shelby GT500 – with its incredibly potent 5.4-liter V-8 engine – certainly impressed us,” said Stewart. “But it was Ford Special Vehicle Team’s (SVT) refinement of the chassis that made our staff declare the GT500 the best Mustang in the model’s long 45-year history.”

Press Release»

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 28, 2009 – Editors at Popular Mechanics today announced the winners of the magazine’s 2010 Automotive Excellence Awards, and Ford Motor Company set a precedent, winning more categories in a single year than any other automaker in the history of the awards.

The Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards recognize the best in automotive design, execution and technology for 2010 model year vehicles in 10 categories. Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT500 won the award in the Performance category, Transit Connect took top honors in the Workhorse category and F-150 SVT Raptor earned the award in the Off-Road Ability category.

“Ford’s sweep of three categories in this year’s awards speaks to the onslaught of great products coming from Dearborn,” said Ben Stewart, automotive editor, Popular Mechanics.

Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company, accepted the awards on behalf of the Ford team.

“This important recognition reflects the strength and diversity of the Ford product lineup,” said Kuzak. “From a performance car to a workhorse vehicle to an off-road pickup, Ford is building quality products that people really want.”

To determine award winners, Stewart says editors of Popular Mechanics travel the globe and spend thousands of miles behind the wheel of every new car and truck introduced by the world’s automakers. After months of hands-on testing and research, the team nominates a list of vehicles in each category, then votes on the winners.

2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – Performance Category Winner
The editors of Popular Mechanics describe the Mustang Shelby GT500 as a new superpower to contend with in the 21st-century muscle car wars.

“The Mustang Shelby GT500 – with its incredibly potent 5.4-liter V-8 engine – certainly impressed us,” said Stewart. “But it was Ford Special Vehicle Team’s (SVT) refinement of the chassis that made our staff declare the GT500 the best Mustang in the model’s long 45-year history.”

2010 Ford Transit Connect – Workhorse Category Winner
Popular Mechanics editors praise the Ford Transit Connect as a fresh alternative to a full-size van that is packaged to address the pressures of the economy, urban congestion and fluctuating gas prices.

“It was the brilliant combination of the Transit Connect’s efficient use of space – and fuel – that won over our team,” said Stewart. “This vehicle proves that small vehicles can handle big jobs, and it comes at an ideal time when contractors and other business owners are looking to downsize and save on fuel.”

2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor – Off-Road Ability Category Winner
“The most extreme high-speed 4×4 pickup ever produced,” is the way editors of Popular Mechanics describe Ford’s F-150 SVT Raptor.

“We spent time riding along with Ford SVT engineers at near race speeds and had a chance to climb behind the wheel of the truck ourselves,” said Stewart. “For the avid off-roader, the Raptor is the truck we’ve all been waiting for.”

Stewart says he was particularly impressed with the tuning of Raptor’s long-travel suspension.

“It soaks up high-speed desert terrain better than any production pickup truck we’ve driven,” he said.

so this gt does it handel well

I agree that the roush is the better choice when considering the 2010 GT500… but the better choic in 2011 is the GT and Gt500 thanks to the all aluminum engine on both .. the return of the true 5.0 for the Gt and the GT500 gets 150lbs taken off of the nose which will make it handle a wole lot better than before… the GT500 isnt at all cheap… it’s hand built and has similar interior accents as its overseas rivals

  • AdrianC12345

Real men know what to buy and if it’s a smart choice or not. This car with all of it’s cheap ass crap isn’t smart. it’s just cheap. Now, a Roush Mustang with independant suspention is an OK car because it can handle that power. In fact that car even though it has 40 hp less is faster around a track because it was redesigned. But still, other mustangs without this are a waste of a car because they can’t do anything except go straight while other cars can beat it in curves and races.

  • mattbmx1234

@AdrianC12345 if only you had some taste … your words may mean something other than shit out of an asshole… but you drive shit .. so i would imagine you to speak the same….and the term hillbillies.. is quite unintelligent .. what are you… five years old??.. grow up.. and get some non pussy taste.. real men drive cars like the GT500… and boys like yourself drive little circus cars

  • kernel550

I LOVE THIS CAR FOR EVER

  • AdrianC12345

So in reality you’re the idiot, the mustang gets outpreformed by other cars. It just doesn’t have the handling that it needs to cope with it’s power. In a cuircut race,in which you actually need skill, the mustang would lose to the cars I just mentioned. You hill billies don’t know you can get more power other than making the engine bigger, which frankly ruins handling puting too much wheight on the front wheels, and also speed.

  • AdrianC12345

    - quarter mile drag race because the Jag has a thing called better engineering and not just extra power.

  • AdrianC12345

They aren’t garbage, it just shows what a waste of an engine the Mustang is. The V8 is more than twice as big and doesn’t even produce twice as much power. And for the record Volvo doesn’t use 4 cylinders. And who cares about straight line speed, all you have to do is floor it and change gears, in a real race or on a canyon road where life really takes place an Evo or STI or S60R would kill the Mustang while it just spind it’s tires out. An XKR with 30 less horespower can still beat it in a -

  • mattbmx1234

@yamabob776 the winner should be both… both are on the same side … putting jap garbage in it’s place….

  • mattbmx1234

@AdrianC12345 wow.. you’re an idiot… who gives a damn about 4 banger garbage but those who are garbage themselves??// those cars you listed weigh less… and no stock evo or sti would EVER run low 12′s from the factory… it’s the fact that the GT500 weighs as much as it does and performs the way it does iis what appeals to people .. with real taste

  • yamabob776

@dtcohen66 no not really at all….chevys v8 muscl vs fords v8 muscle. and the winner is th chevy

  • Pube83

Sure, one’s a sports coupe and one’s a sports car. But they’re both weekend toys that cost $50k and their prospective buyers are much more likely to cross-shop these together rather than against say…a BMW M3 or Porsche Cayman S.

  • dtcohen66

The gt500 out handles the Hennessey hpe550and comparing Corvettes to mustangs is like comparing apples to oranges, they are 2 completely different cars

  • Jaybird5000

i would pick the mustang over imports or cameros. too bad it cost a lot
