Since the Lotus Elise‘s introduction at the Geneva Auto Show, Lotus yesterday announced its more fuel efficient 2011 Lotus Elise S, which is rated at 47 miles per gallon on the highway. And that is equivalent to roughly about 500 miles on the Elise’s full tank of gasoline. Given the Lotus Elise history of always been a fuel efficient car, the new 2011 Lotus Elise is even more remarkable in the sports fuel economy arena. As compared to the entry Elise Lotus model in the U.S., the 190-hp 1.8-liter is rated at 21 city/27 hwy miles per gallon.
The 2011 Lotus Elise S is powered by a new 1.6-liter inline-four cylinder, which produces about 136 horsepower. Now, 136 horsepower may seem not a whole but given the light-weight body (1,931 pounds) of the Lotus Elise, it translates into a very good power to weight ratio.
The 2011 Lotus Elise S is not only fuel efficient and lower in CO2 emissions (149 g/kg), it is also fast and handled like a super sports car. Zero to 60 mph can be accomplish in 6.0 seconds with the Lotus Elise S, which is similar performance number to last year Lotus Elise model.
It’s just too bad that the 2011 Lotus Elise S will be only available in Europe. I guess, Americans like more power.
