The big question that always comes back to us for nearly 5 decades is “What is better, Camaro or Mustang”? Well Motor Trend put that question to test again, but this time, it did it with an uneven match up. Is it because that Chevy didn’t have a production supercharged Camaro SS version available to drag race with the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500?
Motor Trend ran a drag race between the Camaro SS and Mustang Shelby, and the Mustang Shelby crushed the Camaro by a whole second. You may think a whole second is not a whole lot in everyday situation, but when you are driving at 115 miles per hour that is a lot of distance covered.
Lets do a simple calculation, 115 mi/hr x 1hr/60 min x 1min/60sec x 5280ft/mi = 169 ft/s
So according to the calculation above, in one second at 115 miles per hour, you can cover 169 ft. That is a little bit more than half of a football field.
Now let’s look at the specs of the Camaro SS and Ford Mustang Shelby. The Camaro SS equipped with a naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 engine, which produces a projected 422 horsepower. While the Mustang Shelby equipped with a 5.4L V8, supercharged engine, which produces roughly about 540 horsepower. That is more than 118 horsepower than the Camaro SS. The Ford Shelby Mustang’s horsepower is reaching into the Chevy Corvette territory. As for the price comparison, the Ford Shelby Mustang costs about $50,000 and the Chevy Camaro SS costs about $33,000. Watch the first video below for yourself. Then read on for a surprise.
When it comes to drag race, shear horsepower is everything. This is not a fair match but Motor Trend did it anyway. Just wait till GM slaps a supercharger into the Camaro SS next time, and we’ll see who is truly the winner (Nah, that would be too long of a wait). Hennessey, anyone? Me, me, me! Ok watch the second video below because you will like it.
This is too much to watch!
