Citroen has been working hard with a lot of concept cars coming out from its designing department since the Geneva Auto Show of last year. The Citroen Metropolis sedan/limousine concept is just another conceptual design that may see the light of day. Citroen will unveil the Metropolis Concept sedan Shanghai World Fair on May 1st.

The Citroen Metropolis sedan/limousine is really not a sedan, more of like a limousine. It measures about 17.4 feet in length, 6.6 feet in width and 4.6 feet in height, which is a lot larger than most sedans in the market.

What’s unique about the Citroen Metropolis sedan is that, instead of using big gas guzzler V8 or V10 engine ike other sedan/limo in its class, it uses a hybrid powertrain system of a 2.0-liter V6 engine coupled with an electric motor to produce good enough power and yet fuel efficient. The Metropolis can run in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mode with its electric motor developing a continuous 54 hp (40kW) to a peak of 127 hp (70kW). While the V6 engine develops 268 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque.

When full power is on demand, the combined electric motor and combustion engine are kicked in to produce 463 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. According Citroen’s claim that the car’s hybrid system is equivalent to a vehicle fitted with 4.0-litre V8 gasoline engine, but only emits a smaller carbon footprint of just about 70g/km.

If such a claim is true, no doubt, we’ll those are very good performance numbers. And we may get to see the Citroen Metropolis sedan/limo somewhere in 2012 to compete with the new 2011 Audi A8 L or 2011 Geely GE sedan/limo.
