2011 Subaru Impreza WRX 11 620x413 2012 Subaru WRX STI may be available in diesel

Rumor that the next Subara WRX STI may get a diesel version, which is due in 2012. Subaru has been touting the idea a few years ago, and now it re-emerges again. According to Autocar, the new 2.0-liter diesel engine will likely generate more than 200 horsepower at about 300 lb-feet of torque. But we know all too well, it will likely get a turbo-diesel engine instead, and that will boost power to around 250-hp range.

Insider source says a smaller 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine base-model Impreza is also under consideration. Of course, if there will be such a diesel Subaru WRX STI, it will less likely make to the States; much like the Ford Fiesta diesel in Europe.

Been waiting for this particular diesel model to show up in the United States for two years now.

If Mazda6 diesel shows up here while Fuji heavy industries is dragging their feet… it’ll be bye-bye Subaru, hello Mazda 6 diesel!

I so wish that more diesel vehicles will make it to the U.S., not just the expensive luxury diesels. Bring us a TurboDiesel WRX that can burn biodiesel and have a nice grunty exhaust note and 40MPG hwy and I will buy one! Well,, that or maybe a Civic GX Plug-in hybrid, natural gas car… ahh dreams
