With the comeback of Saab, it needs to design more exciting cars than it is now. Much of its image branded as cars designed by jet engineers, but yet to design anything exciting like a jet. With that, Saab will introduce the 2012 Saab 9-3 to rival the Audi A3.

According to Victor Muller of Saab,

“In our plans for the upcoming years are three cars; – the 9-5, – the 9-4X and the 9-3. The 9-3 will be introduced in 2012 and it is a very important car to become profitable. Contrary to what analysts say, no extra funding is needed to make the 9-3 ready for production.”

The 2012 Saab 9-3 will be based on the new platform called the “Phoenix Architecture”, which will likely be in the next generation of the Saab 9-5 as well. The styling of the Saab 9-3 is similar to the current Saab 9-5, but this time around, Saab engineers make sure that it has jet like looks.

“We can still change the outer surfaces of the new 9-3,” said Muller. “It will be bolder, more typically Saabish.”

It is likely Saab will use the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine from the BMW Mini Countryman, which produces about 184 horsepower. And in the transmission department, a GM developed dual-clutch gearbox will be used.

The new Saab 9-3 sedan model will be the first to introduce in 2012, and a three-door hatchback, a convertible and a Sport Wagon version will follow shortly after.
