Citroen is joining with Changan Automobile Group of China to bring the Metropolis from concept to production. The first design will be coming out of the PSA Design Center in China. Both companies hope the Metropolis will attract upscale Chinese customers.

The company’s CEO of Asian operations, Gregoire Olivier said, “The Metropolis will happen — it will become a real car. The same styling elements will be used for a high-level Citroen car to be developed in China. We want to build up the premier line in China — the Metropolis is emblematic of our approach.”

The Metropolis will be called the DS9 in production form, making it the flagship of Citroen’s DS model line. The Metropolis is built on the same platform as the Citroen C6 and Peugeot 407. The current concept form featured a 2.0-liter V6 that is connected to an electric motor and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which produces a staggering 406 horsepower. However, it hasn’t been confirmed what type of powertain the Chinese version of the DS9 will have.

Citroen plans to build about 200,000 vehicles a year, and will start production in the third quarter of 2012. At the moment, there is no plan to ship the Citroen DS9 outside of China yet. But we doubt that the Citroen DS9 will solely be built for China.
