Mustang engineers and Ford Racing joint up to create a Mustang that is both desirable on the track as well as on the street. The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 already comes with 440 horsepower and good looks, but now, Ford is adding a dual set of keys to start different power management systems.
Basically, 2012 Mustang Boss 302 owners will be given two keys: One has a black Boss logo and the other is with a red logo. With a black key, you’re treated to 444 ponies of a smooth street ride. While if you start the engine with the red TracKey, you have a competition-ready track car with a specialized custom powertrain control module (PCM) software that changes more than 200 engine management parameters from the street version, such as increasing low-end torque and suspension adjustment. The TracKey also includes a two-stage launch control that is similar to the one found on the Cobra Jet Mustang, which can be controlled with buttons on the steering wheel.
“From an engine management standpoint, we’ve done just about everything possible to give TracKey users a full race car experience,” says Jeff Seaman, Mustang powertrain engineer. “It’s not for use on the street – for example, the deceleration is set up to preserve the brakes, and the throttle response is very aggressive. A skilled driver on a closed course will really appreciate the benefits.”
As part of the complimentary package, Ford will be offering customers a track day to get familiarized with their new 2012 Mustang Boss 302. Driving instruction will be given to owners of the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. All travel arrangements have to be paid by the owners, of course.
“Practice makes perfect, and in this case it’s going to be a ton of fun, too,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “There’s nothing like the experience of being behind the wheel of a high-performance car on a dedicated track. It’s the environment that breeds incredible machines like Mustang Boss, and for owners who want to experience all these cars are capable of, we can promise an unforgettable event.”
